Geo-coding involves converting address into geographic coordinates. Such coordinates can be determined for buildings, land parcels, street addresses, and postal codes or virtually any surface feature. Geo-coding allows for the use of street address in map overlays. Point level Geo-coding, GPS Geo-coding, and server based online Geocoding are widely used Geo-coding techniques and these are used based on the context of the address (i.e. urban, suburban, and rural areas). Google map API, ArcGIS extension for geo-coding, Mobile geo-coding, online geo-coding are available widely and these geo-codes are utilized for GIS analysis, cartographic presentation, intelligent transportation, decision making, spatial pattern development and so forth.
